RHEAD, Louis

Born: 1857

Died: 1926

Louis Rhead was an English illustrator and author who is best known for his 1912 publication of Bold Robin Hood and His Outlaw Band. In this work, Rhead connected the events of the story with the customs and manners of the age in which it is supposed Robin Hood lived.

The exact facts behind the legend are uncertain, but most people believe that Robin Hood must represent a real person because of the sheer volume of the texts. The earliest Robin Hood texts date to the fifteenth century. The legends recount that Robin Hood was an outlaw who stole from the rich to provide for the poor. It is generally felt that most of the characters, such as Friar Tuck, and Little John, were added by various authors to enhance the story.
